Categories of Drugs

Respiratory

Antitussive Non-productive cough
Mucolytics Agents that break down mucous by breakdown of disulfide bonds;
Expectorants Dilutes viscid secretions and liquify them so the secretions can be evacuated ; Productive cough
Bronchodilators Agents that relaxes and blocks the effects of acetylcholine, histamine or beta 2 adrenergic receptors to prevent bronchoconstriction
Decongestants Drugs that reduce the congestion of nasal membrans by reducing associated swelling; not effective in veterinary medicine
Antihistamines Blocks the effects of histamine at the receptors in response to an allergic reaction. Generic names end in "-amine"
Corticosteroids Blocks the release of histamine from mast cells used in allergic respiratory syndromes such as Heaves in horses, asthma in cats. respiratory distress syndrome
Naloxone Opioid Respiratory Stimulant
Yohimbine Alpha2 adrenergic agonist Respiratory Stimulant
Doxapram Neonatal or post-operative Respiratory stimulant
