| Antitussive | Non-productive cough |
| Mucolytics | Agents that break down mucous by breakdown of disulfide bonds; |
| Expectorants | Dilutes viscid secretions and liquify them so the secretions can be evacuated ; Productive cough |
| Bronchodilators | Agents that relaxes and blocks the effects of acetylcholine, histamine or beta 2 adrenergic receptors to prevent bronchoconstriction |
| Decongestants | Drugs that reduce the congestion of nasal membrans by reducing associated swelling; not effective in veterinary medicine |
| Antihistamines | Blocks the effects of histamine at the receptors in response to an allergic reaction. Generic names end in "-amine" |
| Corticosteroids | Blocks the release of histamine from mast cells used in allergic respiratory syndromes such as Heaves in horses, asthma in cats. respiratory distress syndrome |
