Term | Definition |

Defense | To stop an offensive player with the ball, you either tackle them or force them out of bounds. In class, we play one hand touch. If you tag the player with the ball with one hand, this will stop the player from advancing down the field. There is also two |
Rusher | This defensive player is responsible for tackling the quarterback when possible. |
Safety | This defensive player stays back toward the end zone in case an offensive player gets through the defensive line. |
Receivers | These players attempt to catch the ball that is passed to the them by the quarterback and attempt to score a touchdown before being tackled by the defense. |
Center | This player snaps the ball to the quarterback to begin play. |
Quarterback | This player runs plays and attempts to make a complete pass to one of the receivers. |
History of Football | Started out as the sport of Rugby in the mid 19th century in Britain. |
NFL (National Football Leauge) | formed in the 1920's in Midwestern industrial cities and slowly grew into a national pastime |
Walter Camp | known as the "Father of Football," helped make football into what we know it as today with several rule changes and game play developments. |
Extra Point | (worth 1 extra point) The scoring team can try to kick a field goal after a touchdown has been made. |
Touchdown | (worth 6 points) This is where a player runs the ball into the endzone or throws it to a teammate who is in the endzone |
2 Point Conversion Safety | (worth 2 extra points) . The scoring team can try throwing it or running the ball into the endzone. |
Field Goal | (worth 3 points). This occurs when the team on offense decides to kick the ball through the field goal during play. |
Kickoff | A game of football begins with the defensive team kicking the ball off to the offensive team (kickoff). A kickoff also occurs to restart the game after halftime. |
Advancing the ball | Two ways to advance the ball up the field is to run with the ball or to pass the ball. |
Line of Scrimmage | an imaginary line between offense and defense where play begins. |
Sack | occurs when a defensive player tackles the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage. |
Football Down | When the ball is PUT INTO PLAY |
ends when ball is ruled dead (play completed) | In a football game, the offensive team has 4 downs (4 tries) to gain 10 yards without losing possession of the ball. Once they have successfully done this, they earn another 4 downs (4 tries) to gain an additional 10 yards. |
Interception | when a pass meant for a player on offense is caught by a player on defense. This player can then run until they are tackled, runs out of bounds, or scores a touchdown. |

Throwing | Grip the ball with your dominant hand. Place your 4 fingers over the laces towards the back of the ball and place your thumb underneath the ball. Step forward with your non-dominant foot and flick your wrist as you release the ball. |
Catching | If you are going to catch the ball above your waist, your pointer fingers and thumbs should be up in a diamond shape up high. If you are going to catch the ball below your waist, your pinkies and thumbs should be down low. |
