Tower Garden

Running and maintaining a Tower Garden

TermDefinition
Aeropoics Using air and mists of water to grow plants
Hydroponics Using lots of water to grow plants; the soil is always wet
Reservoir The green tub under the tower
How much water can the reservoir hold? 20 gallons
How do you access the reservoir? Through the rectangular access port
Tower The large skyscraper-like part that holds the plants
How many growing ports are in one section of pipe? 4
What must be inside a growing port for the Tower to work? Net pots
What is on the top of the Tower? The shower cap
Net Pot A plastic net that is stationed in each growing port to let water in and roots out
Rockwool What sprouted plants are placed in
Pump The part of the Tower that pumps water up to the top and spills down
Where is the pump located? In the reservoir
What must ALWAYS be done before cleaning the pump? Unplugging the Tower
How does the pump work? It pumps water up through the central tube in the Tower, comes out of the shower cap, trickles down to each level and comes in through holes to the plants
Grow Light The lights stationed around the Tower that replicate sunlight
How much sunlight do plants need a day? 8 hours
CFI Hot and burn plans
LED Cool and use less energy
Support Cage Holds lights
What does it do? Supports plants that grow out and away from the cage
What plants need support? Stalky plants, like tomatoes
The grow lights, which are on Timer #1, are on for how long? 14 hours a day
The water pump, which is on Timer #2, runs for how long? On for 15 minutes, off for 45
How many Mineral Blends are there? A and B
How much of each Mineral Blend is added? 20 ml/gallon (5 gallons added at a time, so 100 ml.)
How much Tonic is added for seedlings? 10 ml/gallon
How are Tonics mixed? With a paint stick, not together, added to reservoir
What is pH balance? The balance between acid and alkaline
How is it measured? On a scale of 1-14
Where are acids and alkaline on that scale? High is alkaline and low is acidic
What is average pH for the Tower? 5.0-6.5
Why does water in Farmington tend to be alkaline? Because we are near the second largest lime mine
What is done with school water? It is kept outside for three days, then poured through a strainer to a jug and then into the Tower
What kind of water is good for the Tower Garden? Well water that is unsoftened
Why do we even have to test the pH for the Tower? Because plants, during their growing season, absorb nutrients through the water and therefore change pH
What typically happens when the occurs? The water turns more alkaline
How much water and pH Indicator is required for testing Tower pH? 5 ml and 5 drops of indicator solution
How do you raise or lower pH? By adding pH+ Base for alkaline or pH- Base for acidic
How much buffering do you add at a time? 5 ml at a time
What is good for the shower cap? Keeping it clean and open
When do you clean the pump filter? Once every month
How do you clean the pump? Removing through access port, removing its cover, washing off all debris, and replacing
Why do we trim roots? So they don’t clog the pump
Examples of Top Plants Basil, dill, mint
Examples of Middle Plants Kale, lettuce, arugula
Examples of Bottom Plants Green beans, peppers, tomatoes, zucchini
Sucker Removing the growth in the “V”
What will happen if the tops of the plants are trimmed? The bottoms and roots will grow better
How do tomatoes sprout? By hand pollination with QTips
How do you harvest lettuce? By tearing off leaves or cutting off whole heads
How do you harvest herbs? By cutting off between nodes (leaf stems)
