| caudal | towards the tail |
| central | situated near the center of the body (spinal cord is central to the sciatic nerve) |
| cranial | toward the head |
| distal | father from the center of the body |
| dorsal | denoting a position more toward the spine |
| extension | straightening (a joint) |
| lateral | on the side, away from the median plane |
| medial | toward the median plane |
| oblique | at an angle |
| palmar | the undersurface of the thorax limb |
| peripheral | the out most part, or surface of an organ or part |
| plantar | the undersurface of the pelvic limb |
| prone, pronation | laying face down (in ventral recumbency) |
| proximal | closer to the center of the body |
| recumbent | lying down |
| rostal | toward the nose |
| superficial | surface of the body |
| supine, supination | lying face up (in a dorsal recumbency) |
| ventral | a position more toward the abdomen |
| occlusal | the chewing or biting surface |
| buccal | tooth surface toward the cheek |
| lingual | tooth surface toward the tongue |
| contact | tooth surface facing an opposing tooth |
| mesial | tooth surface closest to the midline |
