Term | Definition |
---|---|
agonist | a muscle creating a movement at a joint, either through concentric or eccentric contraction |
antagonist | a muscle on the opposite side of a joint from an agonist; plays a role as a modulator of the movement of the agonist |
balanced joint space | an approach to understanding healthy movement in a joint; involves looking for balance (over time) in the way the two curved articular surfaces in a joint slide in relationship to each other |
concentric contraction | a muscular contraction where the two ends of the muscle move toward each other; the muscle fibers “slide short” |
deep (one-joint) muscles | muscles closer to the joint, and crossing just one joint |
eccentric contraction | a muscular contraction where the two ends of the muscle move away each other; the muscle fibers “slide long” |
isometric contraction | a muscular contraction where the two ends of the muscle stay the same distance apart; the muscle is engaged but not sliding short or long |
joint | a relationship between two or more elements that are connected and yet have some movement available to them; derived from“joined”; also called an “articulation” |
kinetic chain | a series of muscles communicating information and movement across several joints in deep and superficial layers, to organize movement |
muscle contraction | when a muscle contracts (or “fires” or engages), it pulls, or intends to pull, in such a way that the two ends of the muscles would move towards each other. |
superficial (multi-joint) muscles | muscles more superficial to a joint, and crossing two or more joints |
synovial joint | the most moveable type of skeletal joint; most of the skeletal joints involved in movement are synovial; |
articular surfaces | the ends of the bones that are in relationship with each other in a joint; covered by smooth, compression resistant hyaline cartilage that protects the bone from wear and tear |
joint capsule | made up of layers of connective tissue surrounding and supporting the joint; helps keep the bones in relationship and contain movement |
synovial fluid | slippery fluid that cushions and lubricates the articular surfaces; helps create a seal, keeping the bones in relationship. |
synovial membrane | thin, inner layer of the joint capsule, responsible for secreting synovial fluid; also called synovium |
bursa | fluid-filled sac outside a joint capsule that provides cushioning |
collateral ligaments | ligaments on either side of a joint (outside the joint capsule) that help to guide movement through the joint |
fat | sometimes packed around a joint, providing cushioning |
labrum | fibrocartilaginous ring that deepens a joint socket; found in shoulder and hip joints |
meniscus | fibrocartilaginous ring that helps cushion and guide movement; found in knee joint |
