Radiation Basics

Radiography for Veterinary Technicians

QuestionAnswer
What holds the cassette, below the X-ray table? Bucky Tray
Which anode is more prone to damage? Why? Stationary anode; too much heat is being produced in small areas
What format are digital images stored in? DICOM
Which anode allows for greater dissipation of heat? Rotating anode
Which end of the X-ray tube are electrons generated? Cathode
Which end of the X-ray tube receives the electrons? Anode
During the x-ray production process, what % of energy is released as x-rays? 1%
What helps transmit the electrons directly to the anode? Focusing cup
What device restricts the size of the X-ray beam and reduces the amount of scatter radiation? Collimating device
What is the purpose of a collimating device? it restricts the size of the x-ray beam and reduces the amount of scatter radiation
What are the components of an X-ray machine? X-ray tube head, control center, tabletop, Bucky tray, transformer, and generator
What are the components of an X-ray tube head? Anode, cathode, glass enclosure, and window
How is the electromagnetic spectrum measured? energy, frequency, and wavelength
Why is the X-ray tube enclosed in glass? so a vacuum can be created
Why are short wavelengths better than long wavelengths in x-ray production? the amount of power allows for better penetrations through mass
What are the different forms of energy? electrical, chemical, mechanical, thermal, nuclear, and electromagnetic
What term describes the number of waveforms that strike an object during a given time period? Frequency
What does wavelength pertain to? the size of the wave from crest to crest
What are the two types of transformers? Step-up transformer and filament transformer
How many volts do most transformer units run on? 220 volts
What part of the x-ray machine is used to supply electrical current to the machine? Rectifier
What information is required to be stored with film radiographs? patients name, clients name, date , and body parts/views taken
What information is kept in a radiology log? Clients name, patients name, date, body part, position, kVp and mAs settings, initials/signature of technician
How are x-rays produced? X-rays are produced via rupture of intensely-heated, rapidly-moving, negative electrons. Positive electrons are guided down towards the patient, where they come into contact with film, which is surrounded by light-emitting material
What is the relationship between energy, frequency, and wavelength? The energy of a wave is directly correlated to its frequency and inversely correlated to its wavelength. The greater the energy, the larger the frequency and smaller the wavelength
Describe some of the property of x-rays. 1. Travel in straight lines 2. ionizes matter 3. Produces secondary & scatter radiation 4. Produces a variety of wavelengths & energies

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
