Chapter 19 Inventory: The Veterinary Technician's Role

Explain the importance of an inventory control system. Decide how much product to buy; keep expired items off shelves; perform physical inventory; adequate supply of common medications; correct rotation of stock; tax purposes; insurance in case of disaster.
How does inventory control benefit a business? Recognize the products that are regularly used/dispensed. FIFO; realistic budget; potential growth.
Explain why inventory turnover is important. Items not selling well or used infrequently should be removed from inventory and not reordered; fine inventory balance crucial to financial health of business; four turnovers a year ok--12 ideal but 8 is acceptable.
Discuss ways of becoming an efficient inventory control manager. Organize inventory; keep adequate supply of common products; determine when to reorder; keep accurate records; rotate stock; learn about new products; keep owner informed; multitasking.
Describe various inventory record-keeping systems. reorder log-track products to be ordered; purchase order-what ordered & when it will be delivered; master list--current list of products in stock; cost vs. retail value; reorder quantity; rabies vaccine--certificate must accurately reflect numbers.
Describe different types of vendors. full-service companies-send sales rep to visit; mail-order: daily used supplies such as gauze, etc; veterinary supply distributor-large inventory w/ sales reps (most common).
Describe good communication techniques to use with sales representatives. Let them know scheduled work hours; aware that emergencies take precedence; best to schedule an appointment.
Discuss ways veterinary management computer software aids in tracking pharmaceutical inventory. track trends within the office; keep expenses down; any staff member can check availability of products; manage expiration dates.
