Chapter 11 Drugs Used in Skin Disorders

What is the largest organ of the body? The skin. Part of the integumentary system.
What are the functions of skin? Barrier; senses heat, cold, pain, touch, pressure, other sensations; regulate body temperature; immunologic defense; produces vitamin D3; reservoir for electrolytes & other substances; limited role in excretion.
Describe the three layers of skin. Epidermis (basal, spinous, granular, clear, horny/cornified)--superficial; dermis (corium)--thickest part of skin; hypodermis (subcutis or panniculus)--deepest part of skin.
What are products of skin? hair, other keratinized structures like nails, horns, nasal pads & footpads.
List the common ingredients of topical antiseborrheics. natural oils, essential fatty acids, sulfur, salicylic acid, coal tar, benzoyl peroxide.
Describe the use of topical antipruritics. Cleanse the skin, anesthetic to relieve pain/itching.
Explain the use of fatty acid supplements. Affect arachidonic acid levels and the production of prostaglandins in the body, which can reduce inflammation & pruritis.
Explain the use of astringents. Used to treat superficial skin problems, and to dry moist areas.
Explain the use of skin antiseptics. To clean the skin.
Describe the wound healing process. Inflammation--begins w/ hemorrhage, limited by vessel contractioin & constriction; debridement--begins 6 hrs after injury, neutrophils & monocytes to wound; repair--forms clot, 3-5 days after; maturation--end of healing, period of remodeling.
