Analgesia | Pain relief, in the form of oral, transdermal, or injectable medication. |
Arrhythmia | A pulse deficit may indicate this. |
Atelectasis | The lack of gas exchange within alveoli usually caused by alveolar collapse or fluid consolidation. |
Auscultation | Listening to the sounds produced by the body. |
Bradycardia | A slower-than-normal heart rate |
Capillary refill time | The time required for blood to refill capillaries after displacement by finger pressure. |
Central catheter | A long catheter left in place for extended periods. |
Closed-suction drain | Drains that use vaccum bottles and plastic conduits to draw fluid away from the wound by producing a negative pressure. |
Débridement | A process of entering of the neutrophil into wound to scavenge debris and kill bacteria. |
Decubital ulcer | Pressure sores exacerbated by recumbency, increased skin moisture, and irritation. |
Dyspnea | A prolonged, labored inspiration effort and a quicker, easier expiration phase. |
Eschar | Necrotic layers of tissue that slough off. |
Euthanasia | The act of ending a patient's life in a humane manner. |
Hyperthermia | Abnormally high body temperature. |
Hypothermia | Subnormal body temperature. |
Intraosseous | Referring to route of injection directly into the bone marrow. |
Lavage | Cleansing of the wound. |
Mentation | A finding during a physical examination that can be combined with lung sounds. |
Normothermia | Maintenance of a normal body temperature |
Nystagmus | Involuntary eye movement. |
Orthopnea | A term applied to respiratory distress that is exacerbated by recumbency. |
Penrose drain | A surgical device placed in a wound to drain flluid. |
Percussion | One method for evaluating a patient during a physical exam. |
Phlebitis | Local venous inflammation. |
Presenting complaint | Is why the client sought veterinary care for the animal. |
Tachycardia | A faster-than-normal heart rate. |
Tenesmus | Straining to defecate. |
Stertor | A low-pitched snoring noise. |
Stridor | A high-pitched, harsh, wheezy noise. |
Pulse deficit | A difference in the number of heartbeats and pulse beats. |
Tachypnea | Rabid breathing. |
