Term | Definition |

Analgesia | Pain relief, in the form of oral, transdermal, or injectable medication; the inability to feel pain while still conscious. |
Arrhythmia | Any abnormal pattern of electrical activity in the heart; abnormal heart rhythm; irregular heartbeat. |
Atelectasis | The lack of gas exchange within alveoli, usually caused by alveolar collapse or fluid consolidation. |
Auscultation | Listening to heart and lung sounds using a stethoscope; listening to sounds produced by the body directly (with the ear and no instrument) or indirectly (using a stethoscope to amplify sounds) |
Bradycardia | Abnormally low heart rate, decreased heart rate. |
Capillary refill time | Is the rate of return of color to oral mucous membranes after application of gentle digital pressure and is indicative of the perfusion of the peripheral tissues with blood. |
Central catheter | A long catheter left in place for extended periods; composed of materials designed to produce little if any tissue reaction. |
Closed-suction drain | Drain that use vacuum bottles and plastic conduits to draw fluid away from the wound by producing a negative pressure. |
Debridement | Is the removal of devitalized or necrotic tissue. |
Decubital ulcer | Pressure sores exacerbated by recumbency, increased skin moisture, and irritation; pressure sores (bed sores) that result from an animal lying on a bony prominence for too long. |
Dyspnea | Increases respiratory effort or difficulty breathing. |
Eschar | Necrotic layers of tissue that slough off. |
Euthanasia | The act of ending a patient's life in a humane manner. |
Hyperthermia | An increase above the body's normal temperature caused by drugs, toxins, or external temperature, such as in heat stroke; increased body temperature. |
Hypothermia | Decreased body temperature. |
Intraosseous | Referring to route of injection directly into the bone marrow. |
Lavage | To irrigate or wash. |
Mentation | The mental state or status of a patient; the patient's attentiveness or reaction to its environment; mental function. |
Normothermia | Normal body temperature. |
Nystagmus | Involuntary eye movement. |
Orthopnea | Is a term applied to respiratory distress that is exacerbated by recumbency. |
Penrose drain | A surgical devise placed in a wound to drain fluid; consists of a soft rubber tube placed in a wound area. |
Percussion | Tapping the body's surface to produce vibration and sound; commonly used on the thorax for examining the heart and lungs; the creation of waves of air to loosen secretions in lungs. typically accomplished by clapping hands across the thorax. |
Phlebitis | Local venous inflammation. |
Presenting complaint | What the client perceives the patient's problem to be; the primary medical problem. |
Tachycardia | Abnormally rapid beating of the heart. |
Tenesmus | Straining to defecate. |
Stertor | Is defined as a low-pitched snoring noise. |
Stridor | Is a high-pitched, harsh,wheezy noise. |
Pulse deficit | Presence of a difference between the heart rate and pulse rate, as in atrial fibrillation. |
Tachypnea | Rapid breathing. |
