Directional Planes

TermDefinition
Anterior situated at the front
Caudal directed toward the tail
Cranial directed toward the cranium
Caudocranial (CdCr) directionally pertaining to coursing from the tail to the head
Craniocaudal (CrCd) directionally pertaining to coursing from the head to the tail
Dorsal directed toward the back
Palmar pertaining to the sole of the forefeet
Dorsopalmar (Dpa) directionally pertaining to coursing from the dorsum to the sole of the forefoot
Plantar pertaining to the sole of the hindfeet
Dorsoplantar (Dpl) directionally pertaining to coursing from the dorsum to the sole of the hindfoot
Ventral directed toward the belly
Dorsoventral (DV) directionally pertaining to coursing from the dorsum to the belly
Lateral pertaining to the side
Medial (M) pertaining to the middle
Mediolateral directionally pertaining to coursing from the middle to the side
Palmarodorsal directionally pertaining to coursing from the sole to the dorsum of the forefoot
Plantarodorsal (PlD) directionally pertaining to coursing from the sole to the dorsum of the hindfoot
Posterior pertaining to the rear
Rostral directed toward the nose
Contralateral pertaining to the opposite side
Ipsilateral pertaining to the same side
Medial Plane divides the body into equal right and left halves
Sagittal Plane a section parallel to the long axis of the body or parallel to the medial plane, dividing the body into right and left unequal parts
Dorsal Plane A section through the side of the body passing at right angles and dividing the body into dorsal and ventral portions
Transverse Plane a perpendicular transection to the long axis of the trunk, head, limb, or other appendage
Proximal (Pr) directed toward the torso
Distal (Di) directed away from the torso
Superficial Toward the surface of the body or a body part
Deep Toward the center of the body or a body part
Barrel Trunk of the body - formed by the rib cage and the abdomen
Flank Lateral surface of the abdomen between the last rib and the hind legs
Brisket Area at the base of the neck, between the front legs, that covers the cranial end of the sternum
Poll Top of the head between the bases of the ears
Withers Area dorsal to the scapulas
Tailhead Dorsal part of the base of the tail
