Directional Veterinary Terminology

Aspect Area
Dorsal Upper surface (back area) of the animal
Dorsal Recumbency Lying on the back
Caudal Toward the tail
Cranial Toward the head
Plantar The bottom of the hind feet
Palmar The bottom of the front feet
Lateral Side of body; toward the outside
Medial Side of body; toward the inside
Proximal Closer to the center of the body
Distal Away from the center of the body
Recumbency Lying in position
Right lateral recumbency Lying on its right side
Transverse Across an area; dividing it into cranial and caudal sections
Rostral Towards the nose
Ventral Towards the abdomen or belly area
Sternal recumbency Also know as ventral recumbency; lying on its chest/belly area
