Chapter 3 - Looking at the Entire Body

Median Plane Line that runs down the center of the body and divides into equal right and left halves
Medial Towards the median plane
Lateral Away from the middle of the body
Rostral On the head, towards the nose
Cranial Toward the head direction of the body
Caudal Toward the tail end of the body
Transverse Plane Divides the body into cranial and caudal end
Proximal A position on a limb that is closer to the point of attachment on the body
Distal A position on a limb that is farther away from the point of attachment on the body
Dorsal Towards the animal's back
Ventral Towards the animal's belly
Dorsal Plane Splits the body into dorsal and ventral portions
Palmar The bottom of the front feet
Plantar The bottom of the back feet
Superficial Toward the surface of the body
Deep or Internal Toward the center of the body
Recumbency Lying down
