| Allied Powers | Alliance of Great Britain, Soviet Union, United States, and France during World War II. |
| Blitzkrieg | 'lightning war'-a German military tactic which involved aerial bombardment followed by tanks and then infantry. |
| The Phoney War | period of calm after the invasion of Poland in September 1939 and the invasion of Western Europe in the spring of 1940. |
| Operation Dynamo | the code name given to the evacuation of British soldiers from the French port of Dunkirk. Over 338,000 soldiers were rescued in six days. |
| Vichy France | a pro-German puppet state in southern France. |
| Operation Sea Lion | the code name for Hitler's planned invasion of Britain. It never took place after the German's defeat in the Battle of Britain. |
| the Battle of Britain | the battle for air supremacy between the RAF and the Luftwaffe during 1940 and 1941. |
| the Blitz | the heavy bombing of British cities during 1040 and 1941 |
| Lend-Lease | the arrangement for military materials to be provided by the Americans to the British during the war. |
| Operation Barbarossa | the code name given to Hitler's invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941. |
| Scorched Earth | name given to the Red Army's policy of destroying anything that could be of use to the enemy as they retreated from the advancing German army in 1941. |
| Battle of Stalingrad | Unsuccessful German attack on the city of Stalingrad during World War II from 1942 to 1943 and proved to be a major turning point. |
| Pearl Harbour | The bombing of the American naval base in Hawaii by Japan caused the Americans to enter WWII |
| Operation Overlord | the code name for the invasion of continental Europe from the west which took place on D-Day 6th June 1944 |
| The Battle of the Bulge | Last major battle in the west. The Allies advanced towards the German border. In the winter of 1944, Germany staged a counterattack in Belgium and Luxembourg which pushed a 30 mile "bulge" into the Allied lines. The Allies defeated them. |
| The Yalta Conference | meeting held by the Allied leaders in 1945 to discuss the future of Europe after the war ended. |
| VE Day | Victory in Europe Day. The war in Europe was over. Churchill declared the following day, 8th May 1945 as VE day. |
| President Truman | the President of the USA who ordered the dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan. |
| Nuremberg Trials | Nazi leaders were tried to war crimes at Nuremberg between November 1945 and October 1946. |
| United Nations | an organisation established after WWII with the aim of keeping world peace. |
