Hitler's Foreign Policy and the Outbreak of WWII

Lebensraum | Hitler's plan to create "living space" by extending the German border eastwards |
Rome-Berlin Axis | a friendly agreement between Italy and Germany signed in 1936 |
Pact of Steel | a military agreement between Italy and Germany whereby each country promised to help the other in any future war. |
Appeasement | the foreign policy followed by Britain whereby it was believed that war with Germany could be avoided if Hitler was allowed to revise some of the terms of the Derailed Treaty |
Maginot Line | a large defensive fortification that the French built along the French/German border |
Rhineland | a demilitarised zone after WWI but in 1936 Hitler sent German troops into it. |
Anschluss | the union between Germany and Austria, March 1938. This union violated the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. |
Sudetenland | a border region between Germany and Czechoslovakia which Hitler wanted. |
Munich Agreement | the Sudetenland was given to Germany on condition that this was Hitler's last demand. |
The Nazi-Soviet Pact | a ten-year non-aggression pact signed by Germany and the Soviet Union in August 1939. |
