Endoparasites

What is an endoparasite? A parasite found on the inside of an animal
Name two common endoparasites? Tapeworm and roundworm
Describe a tapeworm Long, tape-like worm with a body that is divided into sections, each of which contains eggs
What is the head end of a tapeworm called? Scolex
How does the tapeworm attach itself to the host animal? It uses the head end (scolex) to attach itself to the intestinal lining
In which animals are tapeworms a common problem? Cats and dogs
Roundworms and some species of tapeworm are ZOONOTIC - what does that mean? They can be passed from animals to humans
What precautions should we take when handling animals with tapeworms or roundworms? Gloves should be worn. Safe disposal of faeces (poo) and gloves is very important
What are the signs/symptoms of a tapeworm infestation? Bloated abdomen. Vomiting. Diarrhoea. Weight loss. Worm segments visible in faeces. Anal irritation. Excessive licking around the anus.
What is meant by 'scooting'? When a dog or a cat sits down and drags themselves across the floor. Sign of anal irritation.
How can tapeworms be prevented? Regular use treatments applied directly to the animal’s skin/fur, tablets or liquids/paste. Good hygiene of the animal’s environment. Mite and flea control.
Describe a roundworm Long, round worm which looks like white earthworms or strands of spaghetti.
Where are roundworms commonly found? In young cats (toxocara cati) and young dogs (toxocara canis)
What are the signs/symptoms of a roundworm infestation? Coughing. Vomiting (worms may be visible in the vomit). Diarrhoea. Lethargy. Bloated abdomen.
Severe roundworm infestations can lead to secondary problems, name one. Pneumonia when larval worms enter the lungs
How can roundworm be prevented? Regular use of treatments applied directly to the animal’s skin/fur, tablets or liquids/paste. Puppies and kittens should be wormed early.
Why should female animals be treated for roundworm before breeding? To prevent larvae migrating through the placenta,
