Veterinary Neurology Terms
Term | Definition |

Neuron | Single nerve cell w/ a cell body, axon, dendrite. |
Afferent (sensory) Neuron | Neurons that conduct impulses from body to brain and spinal cord. |
Efferent (motor) Neuron | Motor neurons that convey impulses from brain and spinal cord to muscles and glands. |
Reflex | Involuntary response to stimuli. |
Encecphal/o | Combining form for brain |
Myel/o | Combining form for spinal cord. |
Epidural | Injecting local anesthesia agent into epidural space or spinal canal->numbs. |
Ataxia | Failure of muscular coordination; irregularity of muscular reaction. |
Hematoma | Localized collection of extravasculated blood; usually clotted (bruise). |
IVDD | Intervertebral disc disease-- Pain and neurologic defects, the paralysis-- displacement of part or all nucleus of intervertebral discs. |
Analgesia | Insensibility to pain. |
Anesthesia | Loss of feeling in part or all of body. |
Laminectomy | Procedure in which a portion of the vertebral arch is removed to relieve signs caused by IVDD. |
