Ophthalmic and Otoscopic Procedures - VTT 226

QuestionAnswer
What are the 3 parts of the ear? External, Middle and Inner
External ear parts? Pinna, ear canal, tympanic membrane
Middle ear parts? Eustachian tube, Ossicles bones
What is an otoscope? Hand held device with a light, for looking into the external ear canal
Other possible equipment for otoscope? Ear curette or loop, alligator forceps.
Common ear problems? Otitis externa, mites, ruptured tympanic membrane, aural hematoma
What does a schirmer tear test? It tests tear production.
Common eye problems? Corneal abrasion, entropion, ectropion, cataracts, cherry eye, KCS, glaucoma, proptosis
For ear exam, what should you note? Objects, mites, irritation, debri (colour, texture), smell
For eye exam, what should you note? Abnormalities of eyelids, sclera, cornea, iris, lens, nictitating membrane, anterior chamber. Also note: discharge, tumors, yellow sclera, cloudy cornea, inverted eyelashes, iris spots, pupil size, PLR, entropion
Anesthetic used for eyes? Proparacaine
