Question | Answer |
---|---|
Ocular system | Responsible for vision |
Eyes | Receptor organs for sight |
Intraocular | Within the eyeball |
Extraocular | Outside of the eyeball |
Periocular | Around the eyeball |
Adnexa | accessory structures including orbit, muscles, eyelids, eyelashes, conjunctiva, lacrimal apparatus |
Stroma | Supporting tissue of eye organ |
Orbit | Bony cavity of the skull containing the eyeball |
Periorbita | Eye socket |
Seven eye muscles | Ventral & dorsal obliques, dorsal/medial/ventral/lateral rectus, retractor bulbi |
Extrinsic muscles | 6 muscles that attach outside eyeball to the eye socket |
Levator Palpebrae Muscles | Muscles that raise the upper eyelids |
Eyelid | Contains upper and lower, protect the eye from injury, foreign material and light |
Blephar/o | Eyelid |
Palpebra | Eyelid |
Palpebral | Pertaining to eyelid |
Palpebral Reflex | Blink reflex |
Canthus | The angle where the upper and lower eyelids meet |
Medial Canthus | Corner of the eye nearest to the nose |
Lateral Canthus | Corner of the eye furthest from the nose |
Tarsal Plate | Platelike framework within the upper & lower eyelids that provides stiffness and shape |
Meibomian Glands | Sebaceous glands on the margins of the eyelid (Tarsal glands) |
Eyelashes | Cilia that protect the eye from foreign material |
Conjunctiva | Mucous membrane that lines the underside of the eyelid and covers the exposed surfaces of the eyeball |
Nictating membrane | Conjunctival fold attached at the medial canthus that moves across the cornea (third eyelid) |
Lacrimal apparatus | Structures that produce, store and remove tears |
Lacrimation | Normal tear secretion |
Lacrimal canaliculi | Ducts at the medial canthus that collect tears and drain them into the lacrimal sac |
Lacrimal Sac | Enlargement that collects tears at the upper portion of the tear duct |
Nasolacrimal duct | Passageway that drains tears into the nose |
Dorsal punctum | small spot near the upper medial canthus where the nasolacrimal duct begins |
Ventral punctum | Small spot near the lower medial canthus where the nasolacrimal duct begins |
Multi-layered wall of the eyeball | Sclera, choroid, retina |
Sclera | White of the eye; fibrous outer layer that maintains shape |
Choroid | Opaque middle |
