Codis “Combined DNA Index System” (CODIS) is the generic term used to describe the FBI’s program of support for criminal justice DNA databases as well as the software used to run these databases.
RFLP a variation in the length of restriction fragments produced by a given restriction enzyme in a sample of DNA. Such variation is used in forensic investigations and to map hereditary disease.
Sticky Ends an end of a DNA double helix at which a few unpaired nucleotides of one strand extend beyond the other.
DNA fingerprints the analysis of DNA from samples of body tissues or fluids in order to identify individuals.
Cleave split or sever something
DNA deoxyribonucleic acid, a self-replicating material present in nearly all living organisms as the main constituent of chromosomes. It is the carrier of genetic information.
Comb prepare (wool, flax, or cotton) for manufacture with a comb.
Restriction Enzyme an enzyme produced chiefly by certain bacteria, having the property of cleaving DNA molecules at or near a specific sequence of bases.
Exclusion the process or state of excluding or being excluded.
Hybridzation the act of mixing different species or varieties of animals or plants and thus to produce hybrids
VNTR A Variable Number Tandem Repeat is a location in a genome where a short nucleotide sequence is organized as a tandem repeat. These can be found on many chromosomes, and often show variations in length between individuals.
Nucleotides a compound consisting of a nucleoside linked to a phosphate group. Nucleotides form the basic structural unit of nucleic acids such as DNA.
Gel lanes Gel electrophoresis is a method for separation and analysis of macromolecules (DNA, RNA and proteins) and their fragments, based on their size and charge.
DNA fragments DNA fragments are pieces of the hereditary material used in a process known as sequencing.
Palindrome A palindromic sequence is a nucleic acid sequence (DNA or RNA) that is the same whether read 5' (five-prime) to 3' (three prime) on one strand or 5' to 3' on the complementary strand with which it forms a double helix

Restriction site The site in a polynucleotide chain as to where the restriction enzyme cleaves nucleotides by hydrolyzing the phosphodiester bond between them.
