(DMS) South Africa

Vocabulary related to the independence of South Africa

QuestionAnswer
apartheid The system of racial segregation practiced by the white South African government.
indigenous group People native to a region or country.
urbanization The growth of cities.
industrialization The growth of industry and manufacturing. Usually related to technological development of a country.
industry Factories and manufacturing.
colony A region that another country has sovereignty (control) over.
Afrikaner A descendant of the Dutch colonists in South Africa.
passbook A document that the South African government required citizens to carry if they wanted to leave their "home" region. Used to enforce racial segregation and control.
embargo When a country or countries refuse to allow business dealings with another country.
African National Congress A political party that developed to organize protest and action against the racist government of South Africa.
Nelson Mandela A leader of the African National Congress and the movement against the South African government apartheid policies. After apartheid, would become the president of South Africa.
civil disobedience Actions, such as protests, against the choices of a government.
segregation To separate groups of people, often according to race.
protest A statement or action expressing disapproval of or objection to something.
ethnocentrism A belief that a person's ethnic group or race is superior.
imperialism A policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.
