Articles of Confederation -1st nat'l constitution and structure of gov -no power to tax states w/out unanimous approval -passed in 1777 by Congress, 4 years later for states
Northwest Ordinance 1787 established 5 territories (Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin and Michigan) and set up rules for their admission as states of the union; slavery was prohibited in these areas; passed by Articles of Confed. gov
Land Ordinance 1785 provided for survey of western lands ceded to the central gov by the states; passed by the Articles of Confed. gov
Shays's Rebellion -led by Revolutionary War veteran Daniel Shays, farmers in western Mass. who were heavily in debt closed court houses to prevent the seizure of their properties -many say the rebellion as evidence that a stronger central gov was essential
Constitutional Convention -held in Philly in 1787, delegates of every state except Rhode Island met to revise the Articles of Confed., but realized they needed to write a new constitution, adopted Sept. 17 -the Great Compromise -sep. of power, check/balances, 3 branches
3/5 Compromise delegates to the Constitutional Convention agreed to count 3 persons for every 5 slaves, so that S. states would benefit from increased population, but not be unduly punished by heavier taxation
The Federalist -a series of articles written by John Jay, Madison, and Hamilton, carried in newspapers -explained the new constitution and argued for its ratification
Letters form and American Farmer -written by a Frenchman 1780s -fostered the notion that America was a kind of melting pot of many ethnicities -asked the question "what is and American?" -suggested that American character is unique
Hamilton's Economic Program -the fed gov would assume the war debts of the states -manufacturing should be promoted -a central bank of the US should be created
Alien and Sedition Acts -passed during John Adams admin. -included a Naturalization Act that increased residency requirements for citizenship from 5-14 years -Alien Act gave gov right to deport aliens -Sedition Act allows gov to prosecute those who criticize the gov
"Revolution of 1800" -1800 presidential election -tie between T. Jefferson and Aaron Burr -led to passage of 12th amendment to prevent similar outcome -peaceful transfer of power from Federalists to Republicans
John Marshall -a Federalist, Chief Justice of US Supreme Court -established principle of judicial review in the case of Marbury v Madison -he influenced the direction of the Supreme Court, which tended to favor federal over state powers
Louisiana Purchase -$15 mil purchase of land from French; double size of US -Jefferson's action ran counter to his usual strict interpretation of the Const. powers of the pres and Congress
Lewis and Clark Expedition -aka Corps of Discovery -goal to collect scientific and geographical info and find route to Pacific -Sacajewa, interpreter and guide -Wak-tu-weis, saved them from Nez Perce -2 year expedition
War of 1812 -caused by harassment and impressment of US sailors by Royal Navy and discontent over British support of Tecumseh -War Hawks wanted war -James Madison served as commander-in-chief -WH burned down -after Treaty of Ghent, victory at Battle of NO
