Five Pillars of Faith | A summary of the basic beliefs of Islam. |
Shahadah | The proclamation of faith, in which a Muslim proclains that there is only one god, called Allah, and that Muhammad is his messenger. |
Zakat | Almsgiving; the donation of 2.5% of a Muslim's income to charity. |
Salat | Daily ritual prayer that occurs five times daily, facing Makkah. |
Siyam | Fasting during the month of Ramadan. |
The Hajj | The pilgrimage to Makkah. |
Jihad | A struggle, either externally or internally, against oppression and evil. |
Shari'ah | Islamic law that developed over time to account for new situations. |
imam | A prayer leader. |
Ka'ba | The shrine in Makkah that Muslims believe was made by the prophet Abraham. |
Greater Jihad | The internal struggle with evil. |
Lesser Jihad | The external struggle against oppression. |
