| Dynasty | a series of rulers from the same family or group |
| Harmony | peace and balance |
| Missionary | a person sent to promote a religion in a foreign place |
| Sultan | the word for “ruler” in many Arabian societies including the Ottoman Empire. |
| Centralized | controlled by a single government or person |
| Feudalism | a decentralized system of power when a ruler gives small pieces of land to elites in exchange for work and loyalty. |
| Reform | to change (verb), a change (noun) |
| Unify | to bring together as a single unit |
| Scholars | a specialist in an area of study |
| Food Staple | a food that makes up a dominant portion of a regular diet in an area (includes, wheat, potatoes, rice, beans, and corn). |
