Vocabulary for our unit on Post Classical Asia

| Dynasty | a series of rulers from the same family or group |
| Harmony | peace and balance |
| Missionary | a person sent to promote a religion in a foreign place |
| Sultan | the word for “ruler” in many Arabian societies including the Ottoman Empire. |
| Centralized | controlled by a single government or person |
| Feudalism | a decentralized system of power when a ruler gives small pieces of land to elites in exchange for work and loyalty. |
| Reform | to change (verb), a change (noun) |
| Unify | to bring together as a single unit |
| Scholars | a specialist in an area of study |
| Food Staple | a food that makes up a dominant portion of a regular diet in an area (includes, wheat, potatoes, rice, beans, and corn). |
| Filial piety | respect for one’s elders as described by Confucius |
| Hierarchy | a system of ranking groups of people |
| Social mobility | the ability to become part of a social class other than the one you are born into |
| Codify | to arrange into a system of rules or laws |
| Decentralized | when governmental power is held by many different groups or people and are not unified together. |
| Power Vacuum | a condition that exists when someone has lost someone has lost control and no one has replaced them. |
| Secular | non-religious |
| Divergent | developing or growing differently or in different directions. |
| Warlods | a military ruler that has total control over a land’s economics, culture, and military |
| Canal | Artifical rivers that are built by humans to control flooding or to create water transportation |
