Domestication | the taming of animals for human use |
Civilization | a form of culter characterized by cities, specialized workers, complex institutions, record keeping and advanced technolgy |
Specialization | the development of skills in a particular kind of work such as trading or record keeping |
Institution | a long lasting pattern of organization in a community |
Cuneiform | a system of writing with wedge shaped symbols invented by the sumerians |
Mesopotamia | an open plain in the fertile crescent between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers whose waters allowed for the formation of farming settlements |
City-State | a city and its surrounding lands functioning as an independent political unit |
Dynasty | a series of rulers from a single family |
Cultural Diffusion | the spreading of ideas or prodcuts from culture to another |
Polytheism | the belief in many gods |
Empire | a political unit in which a number of peoples or countries are controlled by a single ruler |
Hammurabi's Code | developed by the Babylonians it was the earliest known written law code. It promoted justice, but often treated social classes differently |
Theocracy | a government in which the ruler is viewed as a divine ruler or a government controlled by religious leaders |
Hieroglyphics | ancient Engyptian writing system in which pictures were used to represent ideas and sound |
Subcontinent | a large landmass that forms a distinct part of a continent |
Harappan civilization | arose along the Indus River and characterized by sophisticated city planning |
Mandate of Heaven | used in ancient China to give divine approval thought to be the basis of royal authority |
Dynastic Cycle | the rise, decline, and replacment of dynasties |
