| Superior (cranial) | above; toward the head |
| Inferior (caudal) | below; toward the lower end of the body or tail |
| Anterior (ventral) | front surface of the body |
| Posterior (dorsal) | back surface of the body |
| Medial | toward the midline of the body |
| Lateral | Away from the midline of the body |
| Proximal | Nearest the point of attachment to the trunk |
| Distal | Farthest from the point of attachment to the trunk |
| Superficial | Near the surface of the body |
| Deep | Away from the surface of the body |
| Supine | lying on the back, face up |
| Prone | lying on the abdomen, face down |
| Plantar | sole of the foot |
| Dorsum | Upper portion of the foot |
| Peripheral | away from the center |
| Frontal or Coronal Plane | separates a structure into anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions |
| Sagittal Plane | separates a structure into right and left sides |
| Midsagittal Plane | separates a structure into equal right and left sides |
| Transverse or Horizontal Plane | separates a structure into superior and inferior portions |
