Term | Definition |
Gastrointestinal Tract | Digestive Tract, begins with the mouth and ends with the anus. |
Ingestion | Complex food material taken into the mouth |
Digestion | Food is broken down, mechanically and chemically, as it travels through the gastrointestinal tract. |
Digestive Enzymes | Speed up chemical reactions and aid the breakdown of complex nutrients. |
Amino Acid | the breakdown of more complex proteins |
Triglycerides | Three parts fatty acids and one part glycerol |
Fatty Acids | the simplest breakdown of large fat or lipid molecules |
Absorption | nutrients from digested food pass through the lining cells or epithelium of the small intestine and into the bloodstream |
Colon | Consists of ascending, descending, and sigmoid sections. |
Gallbladder | Small sac under the liver; stores bile. |

Anus | end of the digestive tract opening to the outside of the body. |
Jejunum | Second part of the small intestine. |
