Abscess | Localized collection of pus that occurs on the skin or any body |
Alopecia | Loss of hair; baldness |
Albino | Complete lack of melanin production by existing melanocytes, resulting in pale skin, white hair, and pink irides (iris) |

Malignant | Cancerous |
Callus | Common painless thickening of the stratum corneum at locations of external pressure or friction |
Corn | Horny mass of condensed epithelial cells overlying a bony prominence resulting from pressure or friction; also referred to as a clavus |
Candidiasis | Yeast infection in moist, occluded areas of the skin (armpits, inner thighs, underneath pendulous breasts) and mucous membranes. Also called moniliasis (mah nih LYE ah sis) |
Cauterization | Destruction of tissue by burning with heat |
Cryosurgery | Destruction of tissue through the use of extreme cold, usually liquid nitrogen |
Cicatrix | A scar-an area of fibrous tissue that replaces normal skin after destruction of some of the dermis |
Debridement | First step in wound treatment, involving removal of dirt, FB, damaged tissue, and cellular debris from the wound or burn to prevent infection and to promote healing |
Decubitus ulcer | Inflammation, ulcer, or sore in the skin over a bony prominence. AKA Bed Sore. (Page 15) |

Herpes zoster | Acute, painful rash caused by reactivation of the latent varicella-zoster virus. AKA Shingles |
Hyperhidrosis | Excessive perspiration caused by heat, strong emotion, menopause, hyperthyroidism, or infection |
Keloid | Type of scar that is overgrowth of tissue at the site of injury in excess of the amount of tissue necessary to repair the wound. The extra tissue is partially due to an accumulation of collagen at the site |
Malignant melanoma | This cancerous tumor arises from mutated melanocytes. This particular cancer is the leading cause of death for all skin dz |
Nevus | Pigmented lesion often present at birth. AKA Mole |
Nevus (ABCDE) | A: Asymmetry B: Borders; irregular C: Colors, changes in or uneven pigmentation D: Diameter, increasing size or >6 mm |
Onychomycosis | Fungal infection of the nail |
Pediculosis | Parasitic infestation with lice, involving the head, body, or genital area |
Pruritus | Simply means itching. It can be associated with a number of disorders, including dry skin, skin disease, pregnancy, and rarely, cancer |
Psoriasis | Common chronic skin disorder characterized by circumscribed, salmon red patches covered by thick, dry, silvery scales that are the result of excessive development of epithelial cells |
Sebaceous glands (acne) | Secrete an oily, acidic substance called sebum. Acne is an inflammatory dz of the sebaceous glans characterized by papules, postules, inflamed nodules, and comedones (p.14) |
Scabies | Parasitic infestation caused by mites; characterized by pruritic papular rash |
Skin tags | Small, soft, pedunculated lesions that are harmless outgrowth of epidermal and dermal tissue, usually occurring on the neck, eyelids, armpits, and groin; usually occur in multiples. AKA Acrochordons |
Sweat glands | AKA sudoriferous or sudoriparous glands, from Latin sudor, meaning "sweat" they are small tubular structures of the skin that produce sweat through tiny openings called pores. Provide thermoregulation for the body |
Tinea Corporis | Ringworm of the body, manifested by pink to red papulosquamous annular (ring like) plaques with raised borders; AKA Ringworm |
Tinea Capitis | Fungal infection of the scalp; AKA Ringworm |
Tinea Pedis | Fungal infection of the foot; AKA Athlete's foot |
Verruca | Common contagious epithelial growths usually appearing on the skin of the hands, feet, legs, and face; can be caused by any of the 60 types of HPV AKA Warts |
Vitamin D | Essential for the normal formation of bones and teeth, helps eliminate waste products from the body |
Vitiligo | Benign acquired dz of unknown origin, consisting of irregular patches of various size lacking in pigment |
