Cream | Combined in a base that's generally non-greasy; applied externally to the skin. |
Ointment | A drug with an oil base; applied externally to the skin and generally greasy. |
Suppository | Mixed with a firm base that's designed to melt at body temperature; shaped into a cylinder or cone for easy insertion into a body cavity. |
Transdermal patch | A patch with an adhesive backing, applied to the skin; the drug enters the circulation after being absorbed through the skin. |
Elixir | A drug dissolved in a solution of alcohol or water; sweetened and flavored; taken orally. |
