List the names of the groups that made up each of the 3 Estates in 18th century France.   1.) Clergy; 2.) Nobles; 3.) Everyone else (including everyone from middle-class writers & lawyers to landless peasants). (Pg. 576 & 577)
🗑
Why is Bastille Day important to the history of the French Revolution?   This was the day when members of the 3rd Estate - along with part of King Louis XVI's Royal Guard - stormed the "bastille" (prison) in Paris, France, starting the French Revolution. (Class Notes.)
🗑
Why did members of the 3rd Estate want to become Nobles?   They wanted to become members of that Estate because then they would not have to pay the "taille" - France's main tax. The 1st & 2nd Estate members did not have to pay this tax.
🗑
What was the "Tennis Court Oath"?   This was the oath that representatives of the 3rd Estate swore on June 20th, 1789 stating that they would meet everyday until they wrote a new constitution. (Pg. 579)
🗑
What does the term "bourgeoisie" mean/ refer to?   This term is a French word meaning "middle-class". They were part of the 3rd Estate in 18th century France and included lawyers, doctors, & writers. (Pg. 578)
🗑
What is the "Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen"?   This is a document that was adopted by the French National Assembly on August 26th, 1789. It describes the basic liberties that all French citizens should have. (Pg. 581)
🗑
List three (3) ideas listed in the "Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen".   1.) All men were free & equal before the law; 2.) Appointments to public office should be based on talent; 3.) No group should be exempt from taxation. (Pg. 581)
🗑
Why did members of the Paris Commune decide to call themselves "sans-culottes" in 1792?   They decided to do this to show that they were "ordinary patriots without fine clothes" - not Nobles who wore knee-length pants that were popular among that social class in 18th century France. (Pg. 583).
