Tapeworms (Tenia spp)   Common in cats. Rodents are intermediate host, reproduce in definitive host such as cat and dogs. Owners will notice weight loss, rice granules on hair near anus Treatment is dewormer.

Hookworm (Ancyclostoma, uncinaria)   History of bloody diarrhea, weight loss, ill-thrift, can cause anemia since they can suck blood. Treatment- dewormer

Roundworms   Found in young animals mainly. Vomiting and diarrhea common symptoms. Fecal float, easy to see. Treatment- Pyrantel

Whipworm (Trichuris, trichiura)   Spores can live in soil, food or water for months. Dogs have bloody diarrhea, may respond to GI antibiotics then reoccur, chronic weight loss. Treatment with dewormer.

Fleas (Ctenocephalides, felis, canis)   Diagnose by visualizing fleas on animal. Treatment- frontline/revolution

Sarcoptes scabiei   Animals are usually young and pruritic. Skin scrapings or tape method may show them, hard to find. Mites that live on skin. Treated with Revolution.

Lice (Linognathus and trichodectes)   Pruritus present, coat/fur changes, can see these with the naked eye sometimes. Young growing animals. Sucking/biting lice. Treatment- topical, bath or flea/tick ointments. Frontline is usually recommended

Demodex (canis, injai, cornei)   Most common in short hair breeds. Lives in hair follicles of all animals. Infestation during stress periods. Hair loss, pruritis, greasy skin and eventual scabs are symptoms.

Demodex Treatment   Skin scrapings to confirm. Ivermetin oral treatment, may need lyme sulfur or amitraz baths.

Toxoplasmosis in cats   cats eat mouse, intermediate host, then infects intestine and starts shedding into the environment. Zoonotic!

Common household toxins   Antifreeze, lilies, chocolate, ibuprofen, rodenticide, Xylitol

Antifreeze   Animals ingest it because it tastes good and smells sweet. Liquid contains chemical ethylene glycol. when broken down creates an acid. 1st sign- stumbling and running into things. by 3rd stage animal will die.

Chocolate   toxin is theobromine
