Geography and Exploration Vocabulary

Absolute Location An exact position on the Earth
Relative Location Position in relation to nearby objects
Region A unit of geography that can be mapped and studied
Hemisphere Division of the Earth into halves
Latitude Lines that circle the Earth from left to right
Longitude Lines that circle the Earth from top to bottom
Mercantilism idea that country gets its power from building up gold and silver supply
Caravel lighter Portuguese ship with smaller sails, allowed faster ships and closer to the shore
Astrolabe allows sailors to use the sun and stars to determine latitude
Triangle Trade Trade route that went from Europe to Africa, to the Americas
Trading Post Empire A Collection of colonies used to trade items, typically along an established trade route
Settler Colony A land and its people that are controlled by a more powerful nation
Isolation Turning inward from the world, no contact by a with other countries
Plantation Colony A type of colony in which large areas of land are farmed by enslaved people to grow cash crops
Colony Type of colony or territory governed by the homeland
Capitalism system in which people, rather than governments, own property, make goods, and buy and sell them freely
Absolutism system that places absolute power in the hands of the ruler
Monarchy Governments ruled by a king or queen or one person
Limited Government system where power is restricted by the people
Unlimited Government system where they government exercise absolute and total control
Enlightenment time period where people start to put their faith in reason or logical thinking
Separation of Powers division of power among the branches of government
