Charles V Holy roman emperor during the reformation. Did not stop protestantism because he was too involved in the wars of the time.

Northern Renaissance The a renaissance moving out of northern Italy and across the Alps.
Thomas Moore Wrote "Utopia". Executed because he did not agree witht King Henry's divorce and the Act of Supremecy.
Grand Inquisitor The head of the inquisition in Spain.
Martin Luther His theme-justification by faith.
Ninety-five theses Critical of church leadership. Luther issued the in 1517, supposedly he nailed them to the church doors.
Peasants Revolt Peasants wanted zluther to side with them. Revolted against landlords. Estimated 100,000 peasants died.
Zwingli If it's not in scripture, don't practice it, don't believe it.
Anabaptists Infant baptism doesnt do anything.
John Calvin His theme- sovereignty of God, predestination.
The "elect" The ones chosen to grace. Associated with Calvinism.
Loyola Founder of the Jesuits. Advicated religious and moral self-dicipline and submission to the catholic church.
Council of Trent Did not encourage humanist training for the clergy.
Peace of Augsburg (1555) To end religious fighting. Problem: did not recognize Calvinism
"politique" A ruler who subordinates religious doctrine with political unity. (religion takes back seat to politics.) Henry IV is a perfect example of this.
Huguenots French Protestants-mostly Calvinist.
Catherine de Medicis Queen mother in France, strong leader, family power.
Edict of Nantes French Protestants to participate in French public institutions.
Elizabeth I A centralized episcapal system with Protestant doctrine and catholic ritual. Lead by a bishop.
Thirty Years War 4 phases; ended in religious warfare.
Apartheid Strict sepparation of races in South Africa. Racial discrimination.
Islam Religion. Spread south of the Sahara peacefully, gradually, and only partially.
5 Pillars of Islam Mecca, Ramadan, Pray 5 times per day, Alms to the poor.
Swahili Comes from KisSwahili- ON the coast lands. A language in East and Central Africa, a mixture of languages and subcultures.
Gold Coast Modern day Ghana.
"Great Zimbabwe" Ancient trading center of Southern Africa.
Ghana Leaders did not convert to Islam.

Spinoza His ideas seem to portray an eternal world and human actions which are unfree and inevidable.
Pascal French mathematician and philosepher, against diety and the Jesuits.
Cervantes Author, believed in Romantic Civalry. Balanced realist and idealist.
