| Artisan | A person skilled at making items such as shoes, dishes, tools, and such |
| Consul | A general elected each year to lead the army and protect the city of Rome. |

| Military | Having to do with the army or war |
| Orator | Speaker |
| Senator | A man who made laws and helped govern |
| Conquering | Defeating; gaining control over |
| Corrupt | Dishonest |
| Dominate | To control or rule by power |
| Official | A government worker |
| Province | A part of an empire or country outside the main city |
| Punic | From the Latin word for Phoenician; "Punic" refers to ancient Carthage and its people |
| Threat | Something or someone thought to be a possible danger |
| City-State | an independent city and the area the city directly controls; a city-state has an independent government and an army |
| Civil War | Fighting between different groups in a country |
| Revolt | To rebel against |
| Dictator | A ruler who has complete power in government |
| Economic | Having to do with producing, developing, and managing wealth |
| Rival | A person who tries to equal or pass another person |
| Civil Service | The group of people who work for the government, not including the military, elected officials, or judges |

| Jew | A descendant of the Hebrew people; a believer in Judiasm |
