| Tribunes | Representatives in the roman republic who represented the plebians. |
| Mesopatamia | The land between the Tigres and Euphraties river. Modern day countries include, Turkey and Iraq. |
| Epic of Gilgamesh | A prominent piece of Mesopotamian literature. One of the first examples of preserved written language. |
| Torah | Translates to teaching or instruction, includes the first 5 books of the bible. |
| Upper Kingdom | The southern region of ancient Egypt. It is the upper kingdom because of it's higher altitude |
| Lower Kingdom | The northern kingdom of Egypt where the Nile river empties into it's delta. |
| Phalanx | The greek infantry. Soldiers would use their spear to protect not only themselves but the man standing next to them. |

| Plebians | Plebians were the common class in the Roman republic. They won a multitude of rights between 451 and 449 B.C. Instituted Tribunes as representatives. |
| Marius | First roman general to come to power based on the support of the army 157 86 BC. He united the Army and redifined the roman Army by putting his soldiers on an official payroll. |
| Sulla | Roman general and consul during 88 BC. Commanded 6 legions against the Italian Allies during the rebellion in which the Italians wanted a larger share of the revenue created by roman conquests |
| Caesaro- papism | The belief that the emperor should not only lead the empire but the church as well, which includes naming patriarchs. |
| Treaty of verdun | Divided Charlemagne's western Europe into 3 separate kingdoms. |
| Chivalry | The code of culture which was meant to tame the the violent world of warriors, came about in the 12th centuray AD. |
| Julius Caesar | Quelled the strife in Rome and named himself Dictator for life, leading to Rome becoming an empire rather than a republic. Was involved with Cleopatra and was assassinated |
| Ziggurat | A pyramid like structure consisting of flat levels which step down. |
| The Nile | A river which passes through Egypt and fed and watered both kingdoms of Egypt. |
| Lex Talionis | Eye for an Eye. A theory of retributional justice. |
| City state | A city which is a state in and of itself, and is not associated with a larger government. |
