Socials Examination

Vocabulary Terms for 2012 Shawnigan Socials Exam.

QuestionAnswer
What are Germanic People? One of the European peoples that spoke a germanic language; for example the Teutones, Visigoths, Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Franks, and Ostrogoths.
What are Barbarians? Originally, a non-Roman person. "Barbarian" later came to mean "Uncultured person", as an insult.
What is Judaism? The religion of the Jews.
What is the Qur'an? The holy book of Islam; Qur'an, in Arabic, means "Reading".
What are Apostles? The first twelve disciples, or followers, of Jesus.
What is a Gospel(s)? The first four books of the new Testament of the Christian Bible.
What is the Roman Catholic Church? The only Christian Church in western Europe until the sixteenth century.
Who is Charlemagne? A frank king. A civilized man whom started the Frankish Kingdom. (Carolingian Renaissance)
Who or What is Beowulf. An Anglo-Saxon epic. A story about heroic deeds.
Who or What is a Messiah? A Messiah means the chosen on. Referring to either God or Jesus as the one who saved us.
Who or What is a Vassal? Someone who swears loyalty to someone in a higher rank (Lord).
What are the Beatitudes? Sayings of Jesus Christ, small prayers. Blessings for the weak.
Who are the Franks? They were a Barbarian tribe. They settled in France. Charlemagne was their great king. Most of the Franks worked as farmers.
What is a thing? A "Thing" was the Frankish word for Parliament.
Who or what is a Skald? A Skald was a poet.
What was the Feudal Contract? The deal or "Bargain" between a lord and it's vassal.
What is a House-carl? A House-Carl was a soldier on foot.
What is Calvary? Calvary is a soldier on horse-back.
What is Propaganda? A idea or story that portray's some that isn't necessarily true, a "Lie".
