What was the major issue sparking WWII? There was no limit to Nazi tyranny & expansion.
What was Hitler's goal? To create a master race.
German success in Poland was followed by what? A long period of inaction during the winter of 1939-1940 called the "Phony War", "Sitting War", or "Sitzkrieg".
What does "Sitzkrieg" mean? "Sitting War"
Russo-Finnish War (1939-1940) Russia attacked Finland to increase territory around Leningrad.
Who did Russia force to sign treaties of protection? Lativa, Estonia, & Lithuania
What was happening at sea? German submarines were sinking British ships at an alarming rate.
What happened April 10th, 1940? Germany attacked Denmark, & Norway in search of iron ore.
Failure of the allies to protect & stop Germans caused who to resign in disgrace? Prime Minister Chamberlain
Who took over for Prime Minister Chamberlain? Winston Churchill. He had spoken out about Hitler in the '30s, but few had listened.
Storm of Fire & Steel (May 10th, 1940) - German panzers moved through Belgium & Luxemburg - By May 20th, British & French were trapped around the Port of Dunkirk - Hitler haulted panzers - Hilter considered English Aryan - British kept air supremecy
The Fall of France - June 14, 1940 - Germans entered Paris - Marshall Pe'tain surrendered 1. Most of France would be occupied by Germans 2. 1/3 would remain French
What is "Vichy France"? The 1/3 of France that remained under French control after the Fall of France.
How did Churchill buy time for England? Hitler still believed that England with join Germany against Russia, but by July 1940, Hitler ordered "Operation Sea Lion".
