Foundations

Foundations of World History

QuestionAnswer
Neolithic Revolution When: About 10,000 years ago. Change from nomadic hunting and gathering to learning to grow crops. Significance: Results in buiding permenant settlements.
Culture A people's way of life - their foods. beliefs, their clothing and customs.
Civilization Advanced form or society; people live in cities, have complex institutions, use some form of writing.
Hieroglyphics Writing is one of the signposts of civilization. Egyptian picture writing cut in stone or written on papyrus (paper).
Cuneiform Symbol writing on wet clay, developed by Sumerians and others in Mesopatamia.
Judaism Religion of the Jewish people. Began with the ancient Hebrews in lands now known as Israel. Moses led Jews out of Egypt. Significance: belief in one god rather than several gods.
River Valley Civilizations Developed in river valleys. Yearly floods deposited rich soil (silt), allowing people to grow surpluses of food.
Mesopatamia Land between the rivers, along the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
Egypt Along the Nile
Indus Valley Along the Indus River in what is now Pakistan and India. This is also known as the Harrapan Civilization.
First Chinese Civilization : along the Huang He (yellow river). Loess type soils made the river a yellow color and were fertile for growing crops. Millet.
Contributions of Early Civilizations Mesopatamia - Sailboat, wheel, sundial, irrigation, legal system Code of Hammurabi. Ancient Egypt: mathematics, astronomy, medicine, sculpture, architecture. Phoenicians: first known alphabet. Ancient China - silk-making. bronze objects.
