What were the crusades? A series of armed conflicts between the Christians and Muslims; a "holy war"
When did the crusades start? AD 1096
What was the immediate cause of the crusades? When Christians from Western Europe set off to reclaim the holy land from Muslims who conquered it in the 7th century AD
Who was Pope Urban II? The Pope who called the holy war between Western European Christians and the Muslims in the holy land
Explain the first crusade Peasants were ordered to fight the first battle; brutally lost, then nobles fought and recaptured Jerusalem
Explain the second crusade The turks started recapturing cities. Then two kings set off to fight them, later combined forces, but the turks still won
Explain the third crusade "Crusade of the 3 kings" Emperor Frederick Barbarossa of the Holy Roman Empire drowned, and his army returned home. Philip of France returned home to recapture English held lands in France. Saladin (turk) recaptured Jerusalem
Explain the Children's crusade Children went to go fight the muslims in the holy land, but were tricked into taking a ship to north africa, where they were sold into slavery.
Who were the seljuk turks? A muslim people from central asia who gained control of the holy land
What was a selfish religious reason for battling in the crusades? If they die, their sins will be erased, and they will go to heaven
What was a reason of the knights for crusading that had to do with wealth? They hoped to gain land and wealth in Palestine and southwest Asia
How were muslims and jews treated in the first crusade? they were all slaughtered
How did Saladin differently treat the inhabitants of Jerusalem as oppose to the Catholics? He did not persecute them; he tolertated them
What did crusaders introduce to the crusader states? feudalism; divided the land into fiefs
Describe how trade picked up after the 1st crusade since there were european cities in asia, they had access to new goods; they exported them to Europe
After the first crusade, describe an example of cultural diffusion. Christians and Muslims coexisted with one another, and muslims adopted some ideas from them
Who were the two kings of the second crusade? Louis VII and Conrad III
Which crusade did Saladin fight in? 3rd
Richard, the king during the 3rd crusade, did not regain any of the holy land, but he did make a treaty with saladin. What did it state? It said that Christians could enter Jerusalem freely
Describe the fourth crusade The crusaders attacked constantinople and sacked it. (looted and destroyed it). They controlled Byzantine trade, and was under western Europe's control for about 60 years.
To raise money for the crusades, what did lords do? sell their land
