Human Rights

QuestionAnswer
United Nations An international organization composed of most of the countries of the world. It was founded in 1945 to promote peace, security, and economic development, and prevent future wars.
Human Rights The basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled, often held to include the right to life and liberty, freedom of thought and expression, and equality before the law.
United Nations Declaration on Human Rights a declaration adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, which arose directly from WWII and represents the first global expression of rights to which all human beings are inherently entitled and consists of 30 articles.
John Locke English Enlightenment philosopher whose theory of the “natural rights of man” were influential in the righting of The Declaration of Independence.
Social Contract Individuals have consented, either explicitly or tacitly, to surrender some of their freedoms and submit to the authority of the ruler or magistrate (or to the decision of a majority), in exchange for protection of their natural rights.
Violate / Uphold To break/To keep
Advocate To publicly supports or recommend a particular cause or policy.
Torture Inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or in order to force them to do or say something.
Oppression The exercise of authority or power in a burdensome, cruel, or unjust manner.
Exploitation To extract all potential profit from a person or situation, often with including actions of excessiveness or victimization.
Empowerment To equip or supply with an ability
Resistance To give opposition to
Upstander / Bystander One who takes action to help by putting themselves in potential danger/One who stands by and watches
