What is a sphere of influence? Area where outside powers claim exclusive trading privileges
What is extraterritoriality? Right of foreigners to be protected by the laws of their own country
What is economic dependence? Relationship where less developed nations export raw materials in exchange for manufactured goods

What is a deficit? Gap between was a government spends and what it takes in through taxes
What is jihad? A vigorous, emotional crusade for an idea or principle
What is a recession? Period of reduced economic growth
What is partition? To divide
How did technology impact the modern world? Reduced barriers to communication and created a global culture
How did urbanization impact the modern world? Weakened ethnic and kinship ties
How did westernization impact the modern world? In some areas like the Arab world, it created a backlash against western influences
How did medical improvements impact the modern world? Extended the life span and preventing the spread of disease
