Water control systems the development of dams, channels, and irrigation system - made settled agriculture possible and produced food surpluses
Big Geography the term used to describe the global nature of world history
environmental diversity geographical differences between regions resulted in a multiplicity of plant and animal species
specialization of labor specific groups of people within a society developed special skills outside agriculture, resulted from agricultural surplus
development of record keeping Use of symbols, cuneiform, or pictographs to keep information beyond the immediate time. Initiated by the Sumerians using pictographs.
new technologies of war Development of arrows, shields, spears, chariots, horse saddles
urban defense the creation of major security systems such as walls, walled cities, drawbridges, moats, gates
systems of rule structures developed by societies to create hierarchy and specialize ruling tasks
territorial expansion spread of political authority beyond a society's original borders

artisanship the state or quality of a highly skilled manual worker (usually associated with decorative craft)
