QuestionAnswer
Human Development Index (HDI) created by the UN, recognizes that a country's level of development is a function of all three factors. (economic, social, and demographic)
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the value of the total output of goods and services produced in a country (throughout a year)
Primary Sector The portion of the economy conceded with the direct extractions of materials from Earth's surface, generally through agriculture, although sometimes by mining, fishing, and forestry.
Secondary Sector The portion of the economy conceded with manufacturing useful products through processing, transforming, and assembling raw materials
Tertiary Sector The portion of the economy conceded with transportation, communications, and utilities, sometimes extended to the provision of all goods and services to people in exchange for payment
Productivity is the value of a particular product compared to the amount of labor needed to make it
Value Added The gross value of the product minus the cost of raw materials and energy
Literacy Rate is the percentage of a country's people who can read to write
Gender-Related Development Index (GDI) compares the level of of development of women with that of both sexes
Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM) compares the ability of women and men to participate in ecumenic and political decision making
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) investment made by a foreign company in the economy of another country
Transnational Corporation invests and operates in countries other than one in which its headquarters are located
Structural Adjustment Program Eco. policies on LDCs by inter. agencies to create conditions encouraging inter. trade, such as raising taxes, lowering government spendings, controlling inflation, selling publicly owned utilities to private corp. and charging citizens more for services
