cartography the art and science of mapmaking
circumnavigation to travel completely around something such as Earth.
caravel a light sailing ship that is easy to maneuver and can sail in shallow water.
capitalism an economic system based on investment of money (capital) for a profit
market economy an economy which prices are determined by the buying and selling decisions of people in the market place. (supply & demand-when demand is high, prices increase. When demand is low, prices decrease).
northwest passage a water route through North America connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans
colony a country or area ruled by another country (ex. the 13 colonies were under rule of England until the American Revolution)
Prince Henry the Navigator (Portugal) Started a school of navigation where sailors and mapmakers could learn their trades. Focused on the west coast of Africa.
Ferdinand Magellan (Portugal) Sailed for Spain. Looked for a strait along S. American's east coast (Strait of Magellan). Visited the Philippines and was killed in a battle. Crew sailed to the Spice Islands. First to circumnavigate the globe.
Christopher Columbus (Portugal) Backed by Ferdinand & Isabella of Spain. Wanted to beat Portugal in race to control wealth of Asia, and to spread Christianity. Claimed the Indies for Spain. Died thinking he had sailed to Asia, when in fact he had sailed to the Caribbean Islands
Hernan Cortes (Spain) Explored present-day Mexico. Took the Aztec ruler hostage and controlled the capital. Destroyed the Aztec empire.
Francisco Pizarro (Spain) Conquered Incan Empire in South America. Launched a surprise attack and kidnapped the emperor. Had the emperor killed after a ransom was paid.
John Cabot (Italian) Claimed Canada for England. His 2nd expedition suffered an uncertain fate.
Henry Hudson (England) Sailed for the Netherlands and came to North America. Wanted to find a northwest passage. Explored what is now the Hudson River and Bay & enabled Dutch settlers to settle the Hudson River valley. Son & he were set afloat in a boat & lost at sea.
