Who were the first British inhabitants of Australia? Prisoners
Why did free men and women come from Great Britain to join them? A poor man could own a farm
What decision did the British government make about Australia? Settlements became British colonies
How did the colonists behave? They took the best land and pastured their sheep on it
How did poor Australians feel about officials and policemen? That they didn't care about the poor
What was a "bushranger"? A bandit who held up wagons coming from the gold mines.
Why did a policeman come to Ned Kelly's farm? Arrest his brother for stealing horses.
Why did the police try to arrest Ned and Dan for attempted murder? Claimed an attack.
What happened at Stringybark Creek? Three policemen were shot
What did Ned say about the shooting of the three policiemen? Claimed that he shot them in self-defense.
Why did many Australians think that Ned Kelly and his gang were heroes? Because they fought against unjust officials.
How did the gang prepare for the shootout at Glenrowan? Made an armor out of plow parts.
What happened to Ned Kelly? Convicted of murder and hanged.
When Australia became the Commonwealth of Australia, what two things did Australians have the right to do? Make their own laws and elect their own leader.
