How does rate of natural increase impact per capita GDP and health care spending? The greater the rate of natural increase the lower the per capita GDP and health care spending.
Where is the Three Gorges Dam? It was built on the Chang Jiang(Yangzi) River.
Explain one of Confucis' beliefs. The importance of family, respect for your elders, and displaying moral values.
What is the desert in northern China? The Gobi Desert
What is the importance of Tiananmen Square? Protesters assembled here in 1989. They demanded political rights and freedoms.
what is the main goal of the one-child policy? To achieve zero population growth
What is a multinational corporation? A business that operates all over the world. (Many businesses from around the world have built factories in China)
Where is Hong Kong located? On the southeastern coast of China.

Why is the HDI higher in SEZs? There are new jobs resulting in wealth.

How does the Huang He benefit/hurt the people? Benefit-enriches soil for farming Harm-flooding
Why do many people live on the North China Plain? More food can be grown in this area to support a larger population.
What is a typhoon? similar to a hurricane, a violent storm that brings heavy wind and rain
Differences in climate-southeast and northwest? southeast-warm to hot with heavy rains from monsoons northwest-mainly dry, temps. from cold to hot
What is a dynasty? series of rulers from the same family
Which two groups fought during the Civil War and who were their leaders? Communists: Mao Zedong Nationalists: Chiang Kai-shek
Who won the civil war? Communists
How was the economy under Mao compared to after his death? Under Mao the economy was controlled by the state, since his death, modernization and more openness have led to the growth of the economy
How are the three major religions important in Chinese culture? The values and beliefs shape the daily lives of China's people
What is Buddhism? A religion that believes moral behavior, kindness, and meditation will lead to peace. Also believe in the Buddha's teachings
What is Confucianism? Stresses family, moral values, and respecting elders
What changes have helped lead to China's rapid economic growth? more free enterprise, more privately owned businesses, and SEZs for foreign business
In what ways does the gov't restrict freedom? It controls newspapers and internet service, punishes critics and limits freedoms
What are China's environmental problems? pollution, loss of forest and farmland
What are pagodas? Buddhist temples with multiple stories
What is Tibet? a Buddhist region in southwest China
What physical features seperate the mt. ranges in this region? plateaus, basins, and deserts
What is loess? a yellow, fertile soil that colors the water and gives the Yellow River its name
What if China continues to grow at this rate? Might be difficult to supply enough food or provide a good standard of living for the people

What is free trade? goods and info moving easily across the world with no gov't interference

What is zero population growth? when birth rate divided by immigration equals death rate divided by emmigration

What is the Upper made of? cotton or leather
What is the midsole made of? plastic and foam-padding
What is the outer sole made of? synthetic and natural rubbers
What happened to "Made in the U.S.A"? most companies moved to Asian countries because they have low-wage workers, factories, and ports and we have a higher GDP which means that workers will want more money
What are some positives of globalization? economic growth for poor countries, good relations(smaller chance of war), and consumers get good cheaper
What are some negatives of globalization? Toxic waster in developing countries, abuse to workers in poor countries, and loss of jobs in developed countries
