Alchemy Mixing chemicals and metals in order to make gold.
Dowry Money given by the wife, and given to her husband's family.
Sheikh A ruler in a Muslim community.
Quran Holy book of Muhammad's rules
Shari'ah The laws of Islam.
Shi'ite Believe that the caliph should be elected
Polytheism The worship of more that one god.
Sunni Believe that the caliph should be through Muhammad's relatives.
Vizier A high-ranking political advisor or minister in an Islamic government.
Mosque The Islam house of worship.
Bazaar A covered market.
Astrolabe An instrument that makes astrological measurements.
Minaret Tall thin structures.
Arabesque Geometric repeated patterns.
How many Muslims are there in the world? 1.5 billion.
What was a Muslim contribution to art? Minarets, and spiral staircases
What was a Muslim contribution to literature? Ali Baba, and storytelling
What was a Muslim contribution to math? A symbol for zero, and algebra.
What was a Muslim contribution to science? Properties of metal, and no separation between religion and science.
What was a Muslim contribution to medicine? Anesthetics and pharmacies.
What are characteristics of Sufism? Pilgrimage, Charity, Fasting, Belief, and Prayer.
Why is Cordoba an important city in Muslim civilization? Because Islam was able to make various architectural advancements there - the Mosques had minarets.
Explain why Muhammad was seen as a trouble maker in Mecca. The Meccas believed that Muhammad was attempting to take over the middle east.
