Who was "Jacobins"? He was a radical political power who wanted to kill all who supported Louis.
What did Jacobins do for France? He became leader of the maximillian Robespierre; changed the calendar to 3 weeks of ten days and got rid of Sunday.
What is the Scientific Revolution defined as? A new way of thinking about the natural world, based upon 2 things: 1) Observation 2) Willingness to question excepted beliefs
Who is Aristotle and what is he known for? He created the Geocentric Theory: That the earth is the center of the universe.
Who was Copernicus? He created the heliocentric theory.
What is the difference between the Geocentric and Heliocentric theory? Geocentric: Earth is the center of the universe. Heliocentric: Sun is the center of the universe.
Who is Galileo and what makes him so important to the Scientific Revolution? He expanded the Heliocentric Theory. He built his own telescope; published his findings that the moon and sun have dark spots, and said that Jupiter has 4 moons.
What is the result of Galileo publishing the Heliocentric Theory? Pope calls for a trial; House arrest for LIFE; threatened with torture.
What is Francis Bacon known for? -His writings attacked the people who relied on Aristotle and other ancient peoples. -Encouraging imperialism -Developed analytical geometry (algebra+geometry)
How did Sir Issac Newton describe the world? As a clock; all the parts working together; God is the clock maker, set in motion.

What is Pené Descartes's famous saying? "I think, therefore I am."
Explain Pené Descartes's theory. -To doubt everything until it was proven. -It relied on math and logic.
What does "Laissez-Faire" mean? "Leave things alone."
To what does Laissez-Faire refer to? Refers to the economic policy where the government allows owners to conduct business without interference.
Define Capitalism An economic system in which the factors of production are privately owned and money is invested in business ventures for profit.
What did Adam Smith do in the Industrial Revolution? Founded modern economics. Laws: 1- Self-interest--People work for their own goal 2-Competition--Forces people to make best good/or service 3-Supply and Demand
What is Utilitarianism? The Government can interfere to allow the greatest good for the greatest # of people.
What is Socialism? The factors of production are owned by the government and operate for the good of all.
What were the five "economics" in the Industrial Revolution? Laissez-Faire, Capitalism, Utilitarianism, Utopian ideas, and socialism
Who is Napoleon? French army leader.
What does Napoleon do in power? Leads army against Austria=WIN THEN: Looses in Egypt.
What is a "Coup détat" [Blow to the state]= Sudden seizure of power.
What were 3 achievements Napoleon made in power? -Supported goals of the revolution; Strong central government -Set up efficient tax system (worked) -Got rid of corrupt officials -First national banking system -Established government run schools (boys only) -Restored some power to the church
What were the Negatives of Napoleon's achievements? No freedom of speech, restoring slavery in French colonies, and no freedom of press.
To who is the Louisiana purchase sold? Sold to America/Thomas Jefferson
Who gave us the "Louisiana Purchase"? Napoleon.
Why was the Louisiana territory sold to us? France needed $ to fight Britain AND wanted to tick off Britain; Gave us property for 15 million dollars AND it doubled our territory.
What is "Communist Manifesto"? Collection of guidelines.
Why was France the most advanced country during the French Revolution? BECAUSE: large population, prosperous foreign trade and the center of the Enlightenment.
Why was there unrest in the French Revolution? BECAUSE: there were bad harvests, high taxes, and Enlightenment questions made people uncomfortable.
How many Estates were there? 3
Who were of the Second estate? Nobel's.
What did the first and second estates have in common? They were exempt from paying taxes, and had access to work in high offices.
What 3 groups were in the third estate? Bourgeoisic, Workers, and Peasants
Why did America want to be free from Britain? Because all the 13 colonies were owned by England and for 150 years, American colonies had a sense of independence and each colony had its own government.
What two wars put England into debt? French and Indian war and the 7 years war.
What did the Declaratory Act proclaim of America? That all power is Britain's, that all authority is Britain's, and that all colonies were subject to this.
What did the Townsend Revenue Act do? Put taxes on tea, glass, and paper.
Define "Enlightenment" A new intellectual movement that stressed reason, thought, and the power of individuals.
Who were two important thinkers during the Enlightenment and what did they do? Thomas Hobbs- Individuals had to hand over their rights in order to receive a social contract. John Locke- ALL PEOPLE ARE BORN FREE WITH THREE natural rights: Life (Quality). liberty (freedom), and property (OWN).
"Taxation without representation" Britain did not let us have a say in what taxes were put on us.
WHY did we win the American War? We had more motive then they did; We had already established our own sense of independence; and we fought on our home turf; Blacks and whites worked together against the injustices by the British.
What was the Quartering Act? Britain says: Any house must house British soldiers. 1] America would stay 2] Britain's eyes all over
What were the AOC intended for? To create a weak central government. 1. Only a congress 2. Congress could NOT tax
What happens at the 1st Constitutional Convention? AOC were formed.
What is significantly important about the 2nd Constitutional Convention? We created 3 Branches of government. Legislative (writers of laws), Executive (president), and Judicial (decide if laws are constitutional: checks and balances).
What was the Stamp Act? A tax on all official documents: Wills, deeds, bills, etc.
What was so uproarious about the Stamp Act? It was the first time American colonies had to pay directly to Britain, thus it was "taxation without representation".
What were the "Intolerable Acts"? Punitive acts. 1) Boston port closes 2) Quartering Act reinforced 3) Town meetings were banned 4) Removed British soldiers from the American justice system.
How many people died in the Boston Massacre? 5 colonists
What is the Boston Tea Party? What happened? 7,000 locals decide ships need to leave w/no tax; Britain custom director refused. 200 men dressed as Mohawkin Indians stole and dumped tea.
What was King Georges the 3rd's response to the Boston Tea Party? INTOLERABLE ACTS.
How did the war of 1812 help us? Navy blocked imports. We had to become self-sufficent.
What were 2 Impacts of industrialization? 1) Widened wealth gap between industrialized countries and non-countries 2) Europe is given tremendous economic power 3) Population, health, and wealth increased 4) Development of Middle Class enabled: ---Education ---Democratic participation
What is the "Industrial Revolution"? The greatly increased output of machine-made goods that began in England in the mid 1700s. 1) Natural Resources 2) Business people who were willing to invest in businesses 3) Highly developed banking system 4) Political stability
To what estate do the "Bourgeioisic" people belong to? third: They were the middle class. Rich, but pay taxes. Well-educated. Lacked privileges.
Who were the "Workers" of the third estate? Poorest; paid low and often out of work--laborers; servants.
