What is Torah? The first five books of the Hebrew Bible
Who was Abraham? The Father of the Hebrews; he led them to Canaan.
What is monotheism? The belief in one all-powerful God.
What is Judaism? The religion of the Hebrews.
Who are Israelites? The new name of the Hebrews chose for themselves in Canaan.
Who was Moses? The leader who helped the Israelites to leave Egypt.
What is the Exodus? The name given to the migration of the Israelites from Egypt.
What are the Ten Commandments? In the Jewish and Christian religions, the laws given to Moses by God on Moount Sinai.
What is 'Promised Land'? Term used to refer to Canaan, the homeland God pledged to give Abraham's descendants.
What are 'judges'? Highly respected men and women who led the Israelite community and who played a key role in keeping the 12 tribes united.
What are the 12 Tribes of Israel? Israelites entering Canaan were organized into 12 tribes. Each named after one of Jacob's sons or grandsons. They formed fighting forces to reclaim land from city states. Jericho was the first city to fall to the Israelites.
Who was Jacob? Abraham's grandson - Israel was his name in the Torah - this led to Hebrews new name.
What is a covenant? Hebrews believed - a binding agreement between God and Abraham and his descendants.
Who were the judges that kept the tribes united? Gideon, Samson, Samuel & Deborah (Mt. Tabor fight)
Overview... Moses (10 commandments)->Israelites leave Egypt, Moses picked Joshua to lead people->back to Canaan->1st city to fall=Jericho. Canaan was reclaimed for 200 years.
